African Sun’s Hwange Lodge gets fresh facelift as tourist arrivals rise

Upgrade: African Sun's Hwange Sahafi Lodge

African Sun has completed a major renovation of its iconic Hwange Safari Lodge, part of a strategy by Zimbabwe’s biggest hotel operator to upgrade its properties in response to growing tourist arrivals.

The lodge, located in Hwange National Park, underwent a renovation that included upgrades to its exterior, public areas, and guest accommodations.

“This significant investment reflects African Sun’s dedication to uplifting its properties and providing its guests with unforgettable experiences,” says African Sun CEO Laurie Ward. “The lodge now offers the perfect blend of safari and comfort, setting the stage for unforgettable memories and experiences in the heart of one of Africa’s most precious wildernesses.”

The renovations come as Zimbabwe’s tourism sector rebounds, with leading operators upgrading their facilities to meet increased tourism business, which has now surpassed pre-COVID levels.

The upgraded lodge now boasts 99 rooms, including 85 deluxe rooms, 10 deluxe suites, and four executive suites, all with views of the surrounding grasslands and waterhole, a spot for impala, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, and elephant sightings. With the larger and more luxurious refurbished executive suites, the company is targeting business travelers, honeymooners, and VIP guests. The upgrade also includes a modern gym and spa, a first in the lodge’s 50-year history.

Says African Sun: “The atrium, restrooms, bar, restaurant and reception area have been redesigned to create a cohesive and immersive experience for guests from their arrival until departure. Every space within the lodge now reflects the enchanting spirit of Hwange, seamlessly connecting guests with the breathtaking natural splendor that surrounds them.”

African Sun expects more business for Hwange Safari Lodge after the refurbishment.

“The completion of the refurbishment has further solidified Hwange Safari Lodge’s position as a preferred destination in Zimbabwe’s hospitality landscape. With its enhanced facilities and commitment to excellence, the lodge is poised to continue attracting discerning travelers seeking a unique and enriching safari, retreat or conferencing experience,” says the company.

In the half year to June, African Sun reported a 14% increase in revenue to US$25.6 million. This was driven by firmer Average Daily Rates of US$112, an increase of 9% from the first half of 2023. Hotel occupancy across the group closed the half year at 50%, a four percentage points increase compared to the same period last year.
