Ahead of the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon this weekend, Econet Wireless has announced a major upgrade to the city’s digital infrastructure to meet the anticipated increase in network demand.
The company has doubled its 5G base stations in the city from four to eight, adding coverage at key locations such as Victoria Falls International Airport, Elephant Hills Hotel, and the CBD. It has also upgraded several 4G (LTE) base stations in the city and along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway, a major access route for local and international participants.
Econet says the improvements are aimed at handling increased network demand during the event, while also supporting tourism and local business in the long term.
“As we prepare to welcome runners and guests from over 34 countries, we are committed to ensuring Victoria Falls offers world-class digital infrastructure,” said Econet Deputy CEO Roy Chimanikire.
The company has also doubled the marathon’s prize money this year, from US$25,000 to US$50,000, in line with the event’s growing international profile. Organisers say logistics are in place, including medical and emergency services, hydration points, traffic control, and security. Accommodation in and around Victoria Falls is reportedly near full capacity, while local transport and hospitality operators are scaling up for the influx.
Now in its 18th edition, the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon is one of the region’s biggest running events. Last year, it attracted participants from over 30 countries, a number expected to increase this year.
A day ahead of the Sunday race, Econet is hosting a golf tournament for over 120 of its top clients at the renowned Elephant Hills Golf Course in Victoria Falls. The golf day is part of a wider Econet-hosted weekend that includes the much-anticipated Marathon.
“This golf experience is our way of recognising and celebrating the continued support of our most valued clients,” said an Econet spokesperson. “It’s also an opportunity to engage in a relaxed and inspiring setting, while showcasing the best of Zimbabwe’s tourism and hospitality offerings.”
Participants are expected to tee off early Saturday morning at the picturesque Elephant Hills Golf Course — a world-class 18-hole championship course renowned for its lush fairways and unique proximity to wildlife.
