Econet Wireless Zimbabwe says it will soon introduce new data packages under its SmartBiz offering, responding to customer feedback over recent changes to the popular service.
The company’s SmartBiz plan saw stronger-than-expected demand from users, such as small businesses, churches, schools and home users. To manage demand, the company responded with a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) – which limits usage after certain threshold – resulting in concerns from customers
In a notice to customers, Econet said: “At Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, your connectivity experience is our top priority. We listen to your feedback, monitor market trends and embrace new technology to ensure our services meet your needs. Your voice matters to us, and we want you to know we are listening.”
The company says the upcoming packages will offer more flexibility and better suit the needs of a wide range of users.
“Over the past month, some of you have shared your experiences with us about our SmartBiz packages. Our commitment has always been to provide fast and reliable digital connectivity that empowers individuals and businesses across Zimbabwe,” Econet said.
According to the company, the new offerings are designed to give customers more choice while also keeping the network stable as data demand grows.
“We are introducing new, broader data packages that offer more choice – so that you can select the option that best suits your needs,” the notice said. “These are designed to ensure a reliable and consistent digital experience for all customers, while supporting the long-term viability of network resources.”
Data usage across Zimbabwe has surged. In its quarterly trade update for May, Econet reported that data traffic had more than doubled while voice volumes increased by 44%. The 2024 sector performance report from regulator POTRAZ shows mobile data consumption rose 75.09% in a year, from 171.21 petabytes in 2023 to 299.77 petabytes in 2024. A decade ago, usage stood at just 1.7 PB.
