A few years ago, jobs such as AI Product Engineer or AI Advisor barely existed. Today, they are among the fastest-growing roles. At Econet AI, new jobs have just opened for over 100 AI engineers.
The Econet Wireless Zimbabwe subsidiary is recruiting AI engineers to drive its artificial intelligence strategy, in what the company describes as one of the biggest engineering recruitment drives by a single company in recent years.
The hiring push reflects how AI is reshaping the labour market, creating entirely new career paths as companies build teams to develop AI products, deploy AI systems and help businesses integrate the technology into their operations.
The company said this is only the first phase of a broader AI strategy. It has already received applications from engineers based in Zimbabwe as well as Zimbabweans working abroad. Successful candidates, who must have at least a university degree, will undergo intensive AI training before being deployed into areas including product development and customer support.
Econet AI says it is already helping businesses and organisations adopt AI to improve their operations. “Some of the engineers will be deployed within these companies to act as advisors, which is why Econet AI needs so many engineers right now,” the company says.
CEO Navdeep Kapur said the company is looking for Zimbabwean engineers with qualifications in electrical engineering, electronics, computer science and robotics, including honours graduates as well as those with Master’s and PhD qualifications.
“We are already in the process of onboarding over 70 positions, and we will need more. Even if we don’t hire some now, we want them on file as we are growing very rapidly,” Kapur said. He says the immediate focus is on engineers who will help build AI products, “but soon other positions will emerge.”
